The history of Tiroler Schützen dates back to the Middle Ages. In Tyrol, there were already in the 13th c. representation of whole estates, not only the nobility and clergy, but also citizens, and peasants were represented. Duke Frederick IV Habsburg in 1416 created a new military order for Tyrol, by the nobility lost its dominance. The main weight contributed by citizens and farmers. The essential thing was that Tyrol could be summoned only to defend their own country.

Crucial in the constitutional sense then those designated as Landlibell provisions, the Emperor Maximilian I Habsburg, in common with the Tyrolean Landtag in 1511 were issued. Very early on there were men capable of military events for the purpose of training in marksmanship. At least since 1400 called the people armed with a crossbow "shooters". Under the Emperor Maximilian, who promoted the very nature shooters, there were already many shooting ranges, and with the improvement of rifles, there were increasing these facilities. In 1704 Schützen took the wheel and sharpshooters, who had proved in 1703 at the Bavarian hype so for the first time a strong regiment of 16 companies together.
A new chapter in the history of the Schützen date back to 1796, when Tyrol was invaded from the French-Bavarian troops of Napoleone. At that time was created a popular military service in connection with the league of the Sacro Cuore (Herz Jesu). The sovereignty of Austria, that it had always guaranteed a wide autonomy to the Tyrolese population, was brusquely interrupted in the 1805 from the dominion of the Bavarian government of Napoleonic imposition. Against of it, from 1805 to 1809, a violent rising broke out, headed from the Tyrolese hero and martyr Andreas Hofer, than captured was sentenced to death and executed, by shooting, in Mantua 1810. The Schützen later defended in 1848,1859 and 1866, the southern border of Tyrol, cooperated with the companies of the "Welschtirol", Tyrol Trentino.

Finally in 1915, when Italy betraying the Triple Alliance, declared war on Austria-Hungary, the southern border Tyrol was defenseless and the ordinary troops were engaged on the foreheads Russian and Serbian, the Schützen was engaged to defend their earth on the southern depositor.

Following the resignation of the Chancellor Prince Metternich during the Revolutions of 1848, the young Archduke, who it was widely expected would soon succeed his uncle on the throne, was appointed Governor of Bohemia on 6 April, but never took up the post. Instead, Franz was sent to the front in Italy, joining Field Marshal Radetzky on campaign on 29 April, receiving his baptism of fire on 5 May at Santa Lucia. By all accounts he handled his first military experience calmly and with dignity. Around the same time, the Imperial Family was fleeing revolutionary Vienna for the calmer setting of Innsbruck, in the Tyrol. Soon, the Archduke was called back from Italy, joining the rest of his family at Innsbruck by mid-June.

During these days a critical situation prevails in Tirol, the avalanche danger level is high from region to region /max 7/. Avalanche prone locations are to be found on steep slopes in all aspects, primarily above approximately 2000 m. The reason for the threats are heavy snowfalls and winds of 170 km/h in some parts of the Tyrolean Alps.

Avalanches in the Tyrolean Alps, is a frequent phenomenon. Some disaster avalanche ended tragically. Below are some examples from the history of the Tirol:
Tirol avalanches of 1916, series of massive avalanches in December 1916 that killed as many as 10,000 troops in the mountainous Tirol region, an area now occupying the northern part of Italy and the western part of Austria during World War I.

The Galtür Avalanche was an avalanche that occurred on February 23, 1999 in the Alpine village of Galtür. The avalanche killed 31 people and is considered the worst Alpine avalanche in 40 years.Three major weather systems originating from the Atlantic accounted for large snow falls totaling around four meters in the area. 'Freeze-thaw' conditions created a weak layer on top of an existing snow pack, further snow was then deposited on top. This, coupled with high wind speeds creating large snow drifts, caused roughly 170,000 tons of snow to be deposited. Soon after the avalanche rescuers began to look for survivors; in 24 hours the rescuers saved 26 people. A rescue dog, Heiko, amply proved the value dogs have in avalanche rescue, saving many lives /Wikipedia/.

The sacred heart has been an integral and important part of popular religion in Tyrol since the Counter Reformation. When Napoleon first marched toward Tyrol in June of 1796. In 1767, in Rome, the Sacred Heart image was painted for the Innsbruck Jesuit church replicating the original of Pompeo Girolamo Battoni.
Famous Herz-Jesu-Bild in Innsbrucker Jesuitenkirche. Even Andreas Hofer, the greatest Tiroler hero has knelt here.

Tyroleans gathered in the parish church in Bolzano vowed that if God granted them the victory, they would show their gratitude with have an annual religious procession. They attributed winning the Battle of Spinges in 1797 to the protection of the sacred heart. At the end of the 19th century, adoration of the sacred heart took on new importance as Catholicism waged an ideological war against the threat of liberal and nationalistic thinking. Now-traditional fires on the mountainside in honor of the sacred heart were introduced, competing with similar ancient rites that celebrated the summer solstice.

The Hofgarten in INNSBRUCK (German: Innsbrucker Hofgarten) is a protected park in Innsbruck, the capital city of Tyrol. The park lies on the edge of the Old Town, covering an area of 10 hectares, and borders on the Hofburg, the Kongresshaus and the Tyrolean State Theatre.

During its 600 year existence this icon of garden styles that was originally a river meadow has been turned into a Renaissance garden, a French formal garden and, for the last 150 years or so, an English landscape garden. Its last conversion was conceived by Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell, but carried out four decades later by an unknown landscape designer who deviated significantly from Sckell's original proposal.

The Hofgarten is a recreation area within the city centre with an interesting and varied stock of mature trees, a set of ponds, a modern children's playpark, a palm house and a popular garden restaurant. It is notable that there are still plants in the park that were planted personally by the Austrian Empress, Maria Theresa. In the middle of the park is a pavilion dating to 1733, in which numerous events - mainly concerts - take place, whilst chess tournaments are fought on the outsize chess board there.

During the last days Tyrol was rocked by slight earthquakes. In Austria, earthquakes are confined to the lines of action of tectonic forces, on account of which certain areas in the Eastern Alps are pronounced earthquake areas.

There is a continuous line of foci of seismicity which extends from the Leitha river along the eastern edge of the Alps ( Thermenlinie), the Semmering pass and the Mur and Mürz valleys down to Carinthia; further earthquake zones are Tirol north of the Inn river and the Drau/Drava valley. Tectonic earthquake foci are also found in the Bohemian Massif (Lower Austria: Neulengbach and Scheibbs, Upper Austria: Molln). The earliest reference to an earthquake in Austria, which is stated as having occurred in the vicinity of Tulln, is found in the "Vita Severini" (480 A.D.). The first chronologically dated destructive quake of major proportions was the one at Murau on May 5, 1201. The most violent earthquake to date was the "Earthquake of Villach" of January 25, 1348, which caused considerable damage in the city and was associated with a major landslide on Dobratsch mountain (Villacher Alpe). This earthquake coincided with the beginning of the Black Death in Europe; in contemporary minds the two disasters were connected, as acts of God, but accepted as something both tremendous and unexpected, and yet which also belonged to daily life. The historian of medicine A.G. Carmichael observes, "The earthquake of 25 January 1348 is likely to have fuelled and focused specifically apocalyptical fears more than plague did."

An earthquake commission of the Academy of Sciences was established on April 24, 1895 to study seismic phenomena in Austria, with observatories at Kremsmünster (1898) and Vienna (1902). In 1904 the commission became part of the Zentralanstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik ZAMG (Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics). Further seismographs were set up in Graz in 1904 and in Innsbruck in 1912. Since 1945 all public institutions, and especially the police and gendarmerie, have been under the obligation to report whatever observations they may have made.

Romedius Kirchl /Schlosskirche/ in THAUR near Innsbruck, capital of Tirol was built in 1870.

Saint Romedius (in Italian, San Romedio; 4th century) was a son of the Tyrolese count of Thaur /the House of Andechs?/ in the Inn Valley near Innsbruck. Though the son of a nobleman, as a young man he withdrew to a rock cave in order to meditate. After the death of his parents, he gave away all of his possessions and established himself in the Val di Non (German Nonstal) in Trentino. Romedius is often depicted alongside or astride a bear. According to his hagiography he wanted to visit the friend of his youth, St. Vigilius, Bishop of Trento, (who died in 405), but his horse was torn to pieces by a wild bear. Romedius, however, had the bear bridled by his disciple David (Davide). The bear became docile and carried Romedius on its back to Trento. The tamed bear is a motif also of Saint Corbinian, bishop of Freising.

To the north of Inzing about 20 km west of Innsbruck, Tirol , on the hill Inzingerberg lies the small hamlet named Weiler Hof /or simply Hof/. This is a very interesting place. Some houses are from 14th century. A true medieval atmosphere in Tirol - Oberland!

The most famous son of village Weiler Hof was Jörg Kölderer, court painter to Emperor Maximilian I. Habsburg. Jörg Kölderer was born in 1470 in house, which now is owned by family Wanner. He died 1540 in Innsbruck. Jörg Kölderer was the first chief architect /planner/ of whole Tirol.

In 1892 a missionary /St. Joseph Freinademetz ?/ planted a very special tree, the "Schneeglöckchenbaum"
(Halesia diptera, snowdrop tree) in the village area of Hof, a plant which originates in China. The tree became famous for its curious coloring: im May the tips are getting white, then the leaves turn red, and green in July. Because of its uniqueness and beauty the plant is protected under the nature conservation act.

The municipality of Roppen in West Tirol is located between the junction of the Pitztal and Oetztal valleys. In 1260 “Roupen” has been mentioned for the first time, but this area is considered to have been settled already 3,000 years ago.

The emblem of the municipality shows white edges on blue background, broken through by a vertical line. The edges represent the name of the village, as “rupes” is a Latin term that means “at the rocks”. The gorges between the pinnacles are meant to symbolize the Innschlucht gorge.

The alphorn or alpenhorn or alpine horn is a labrophone, consisting of a natural wooden horn of conical bore, having a wooden cup-shaped mouthpiece, used by mountain dwellers in Switzerland, Tirol and elsewhere. Similar wooden horns were used for communication in most mountainous regions of Europe, from French Switzerland to the Carpathians.

The archaeological record of the Alphorn stretches back nearly two thousand years to the Celtic tribes that originally settled the rugged land on the northern slopes of the Alps. Since ancient times the Alphorn has sounded as a part of the daily activities of the shepherds and cowherds of these mountain people. The Alphorn was used to calm the dairy cows at milking time.

It was the twilight signal for the flocks of sheep to settle in for the night as the shepherds exchanged rustic melodies across the valleys. Such melodies became ritual signals for "All is Well in the Valley" and were passed down through countless generations, from shepherd father to shepherd son. The sound of the Alphorn called the people to gather for council and the men to gather for war. Even the brooding rock walls of the Alps seemed to echo approval to the sound of the Alphorn. Long beloved by the people of Switzerland and Tirol, Rocky Mountain Alphorns now brings nature's perfect horn to North America.

Originally, the word Perchten (plural of Perchta) referred to the female masks representing the entourage of Frau Perchta or Pehta Baba as is known in Slovenia, an ancient goddess (some claim a connection to the Nordic goddess Freyja, though this is uncertain).

Traditionally, the masks were displayed in processions (Perchtenlauf) during the last week of December and first week of January, and particularly on 6 January. The costume consists of a brown wooden mask and brown or white sheep's skin. In recent times Krampus and Perchten have increasingly been displayed in a single event, leading to a loss of distinction of the two. Perchten are associated with midwinter and the embodiment of fate and the souls of the dead. The name originates from the Old High German word peraht ("brilliant").
Regional variations of the name include Berigl, Berchtlmuada, Berchta, Pehta, Perhta-Baba, Zlobna Pehta, Bechtrababa, Sampa, Stampa, Lutzl, Zamperin, Pudelfrau, Zampermuatta and Rauweib. The Roman Catholic Church attempted to prohibit the sometimes rampant practise in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries but later condoned it, resulting in a revival.
In the Pongau region of Austria large processions of Schönperchten ("beautiful Perchten") and Schiachperchten ("ugly Perchten") are held every winter. Other regional variations include the Tresterer in the Austrian Pinzgau region, the stilt dancers in the town of Unken, the Schnabelpercht ("trunked Percht") in the Unterinntal region and the Glöcklerlaufen ("bell-running") in the Salzkammergut. A number of large ski-resorts have turned the tradition into a tourist attraction drawing large crowds every winter.

Krampus is the dark counterpart of Saint Nicholas, the traditional European gift-bringer who visits on his holy day of December 6th, a few weeks earlier than his offshoot Mr. Claus. Like his American descendant, the bishop-garbed St. Nicholas rewards good kids with gifts and treats; unlike the archetypal Santa, however, St. Nicholas never punishes naughty children, parceling out this task to a ghastly helper from below.
Krampus

Known by many names across the continent, such as Knecht Ruprecht, Klaubauf, Pelzebock, Schmutzli and Krampus, this figure is unmistakably evil; he often appears as a traditional red devil with cloven hoof and goatish horns, although he can also be spotted as an old bearded wild-man or a huge hairy beast. He comes to punish the naughty children, and is often depicted carrying them in chains or in a basket to a fiery place below.

On December 5th and 6th, in Austria /especially in Tirol/, Switzerland, Croatia, Germany, Italy /south Tirol/ and other regions of European, children greet kindly St. Nicholas with his bag of toys and sweets only to find the Saint's devilish assistant trailing behind. Hideously costumed as a devil or wild man with a whipping switch or chains, Krampus comes to frighten the mischievous children into contrition.

On the eve of St. Nicholas Day, also known as Krampusnacht (Night of Krampus), in Austria and other areas, sin-loving folk dressed as devils, wild-men and witches begin the ancient ritual known today as the Krampus Run. Often intoxicated and bearing torches, these beastly demons caper, cavort and carouse as they make their way through the streets, scaring child and adult alike.

The popular European practice of guising and mumming during the winter solstice season, ie. using masks and drama to play mythic figures, in this case bearded Old Man Winter and the horned Goat-Man, can be credibly traced back tens of thousands of years, long before the purported birthday of Jesus Christ.

Nauders in Tirol - Oberland is located on a sunny plateau between Finstermünz pass/Switzerland and Passo Resia/Italy and can look back on a long history.

Already in Bronce Age, Passo Resia had been crossed and the first settlement had been built. The name of the village is of Roman origin, the emblem illustrates two fish, attributable to Kuno knight of Nauders (13th century) and Konrad Vischer (16th century), nurse at Naudersberg, both of which had a fish on their emblem. In former times agriculture played an important role, which can best be seen in the many terraces, on which meadows instead of fields are to be found today. Burg Naudersberg

Naudersberg Castle is located along Via Claudia Augusta in Nauders - Tirol /Reschenpass/ and is located in the tri-border region Italy-Austria-Switzerland.

The castle Nauderberg (or lock Naudersberg) was created in its core in 1200 and is first mentioned in 1239, its present appearance dates from the time of reconstruction after the war Engadine (1499). From 1330-1919 she was used as the sovereign's court and was also residence of the respective care and judicature. Since the castle was never occupied by a sovereign, and only the bare minimum was done for their preservation, this demonstrates the castle is still in the original medieval construction stage.

Berneck Castle near Kauns in Tirol /Ötztaler Alpen/ was first mentioned in historical documents in 1225 and named after the Berneck dynasty by whom it was inhabited.

Emperor Maximilian I had the castle refurbished and extended in the middle of the 15th century. One of the oldest parts that has been preserved up to the present day is the residential tower to the west of the castle buildings. The inner courtyards are connected by a long hall featuring a Gothic-style ceiling with wooden beams. The chapel boasts beautiful fresco paintings dating back to 1437.

His father bequeathed him the estates of Carinthia and Tyrol, which he at first ruled jointly with his brothers Otto and Louis, until he outlived them. He secured his position by supporting his brother-in-law, the Austrian duke Albert I of Habsburg, who defeated his rival Adolf of Nassau at the 1298 Battle of Göllheim and was elected King of the Romans in the same year.
However tensions with the House of Habsburg arose when in 1306 Henry married Anna Přemyslovna, daughter of the dead King Wenceslaus II of Bohemia. As the last Přemyslid ruler, Wenceslaus III was murdered in the same year, his brother-in-law Henry was elected actual King of Bohemia and titular King of Poland (1307–1310). The Habsburgs immediately campaigned Bohemia, sieged Prague and deposed Henry, who had to yield to their superior forces.

Rudolph however was never accepted by the Bohemian nobility, and after he died on 4 July 1307, Henry was elected King of Bohemia again, on 15 August. The threat by the Habsburg dynasty fell apart with the assassination of King Albert I in 1308; however, Henry's rule was not stabilized and the new German king Henry VII of Luxembourg also had cast a covetous eye on the Bohemian kingdom. In 1310 he arranged the marriage of his eldest son John the Blind with Elisabeth Přemyslovna, the younger sister of the deceased King Wenceslaus III. Backed by local nobles and his father, John campaigned Bohemia and deposed Henry for the second time.

John was crowned king the next year, while Henry and Anna were forced to retire to Carinthia. Henry managed to retain his Carinthian and Tyrolean estates by reconciliation with the Habsburg dynasty. Insisting on the title of a "King of Bohemia" and the involved electoral dignity, he took part in the 1314 election of the rex Romanorum, voting for the Habsburg Frederick the Fair. His contested right to vote was one of the reasons for the ambiguous result, as Henry's rival John of Luxembourg gave the Bohemian vote to Louis IV of Wittelsbach. Henry later helped to arrange an amicable settlement between the competitors.
Henry II of Tyrol died by cholera at the Castle Tyrol. He was buried in the Cistercian monastery Stams in Oberinntal, Austria. His daughter from his second marriage /with Adelaide of Brunswick/ countess Margaret "Maultasch" gave Tyrol to Habsburgs.

Matthäus Günther (also Mathäus Günther) (7 September 1705 – 30 September 1788) was an important German painter and artist of the Baroque and Rococo era.

Günther, who was born in Peissenberg (at that time: Tritschengreith), helped develop the rococo style of painting in Bavaria and Tyrol, working on over 40 churches. His known work includes about 70 frescoes and 25 panels. In particular, he was known for his life-like imagery and lively coloring.

Günther studied in Munich from 1723 to 1728 with Cosmas Damian Asam, the older of the two Asam brothers, and perfected his fresco painting in Augsburg. He frequently worked with some of the greatest artists of his time, including the architect Johann Michael Fischer and the plasterer Johann Michael Feuchtmayer and his brother Franz Xaver. He died in Haid near Wessobrunn.

Hl. Otto Neururer - Märtyrer aus Dachau

A woman in his parish /Götzens near Innsbruck, Tirol/ wanted to marry a member of the "SA," a Nazi paramilitary force. Since this man was both a professed atheist and a divorcee, Neururer forbade the wedding. The suitor at once reported him to the Gestapo. Otto was straightway arrested and sent to the prison camp of Dachau in Germany. Later he was transferred to Buchenwald prison camp. While there he managed to baptize a fellow prisoner. For this "crime" he was condemned to death by hanging: not by the neck but upside down, so as to prolong his agony. His glasses, his ashes and the charred remains of his rosary were returned to his parish. At his funeral hundreds followed his coffin in silence.

From 1756 he painted in churches in the Allgäu where he worked with his cousin Johann Jakob Zeiller on the frescos and altarpiece of Ottobeuren.

After his cousin’s death he returned to Reutte in 1783 but he didn’t live in the Zeillerhaus. In Bichlbach he finished his cousin’s paintings and at the age of 70 he started to paint the ceiling fresco in the church of Wängle.
On March 1, 1794, Franz Anton Zeiller, the great painter from Tirol, died in Reutte.

The market town of Zell am Ziller is situated at the entrance of the Gerlostal in the Zillertal - Tirol/Unterland.

When in the 8th century monks of the Gerlos pass started converting

the inhabitants of the valley, at Zell am Ziller a monk’s cell was established, which is referred to by the monk on the emblem of the village. First mentioned in 1188 as “Celles”, in the 16th century gold was found at the Hainzenberg mountain and the village gained in importance.

The municipality of Stanz bei LANDECK is located on a mountain terrace 200 m above Landeck and is name-giving for the Stanzer valley, leading to the Arlberg area. The village counts some 600 inhabitants, the first settlements, however, date back some 4,000 years. “Stanuc”, as the village used to be called, has been mentioned for the first time in 1150 AD.

Stanz is located at the foot of the Lechtal Alps in Tirol and has got some interesting constructions to offer, such as the Baroque tavern “Zum Löwen”, which is the home of the master builder Jakob Prandtauer, who built Melk Abbey.

Stanz is also famous for its fruit schnaps. For several years now the village has been keeping the title “Genussregion Stanzer Zwetschke” and has been declared the first distillery village of Austria in 2005. Landeck Castle is illustrated on the emblem of the village.

Schrofenstein castle ruins near Stanz bei Landeck in Tirol have the most spectacular location of all castles of the Upper Inntal valley /Oberinntal/.

The name of the castle dates back to the Schrofensteiner dynasty, who also built the church of Landeck. Schrofenstein castle was already occupied in the late 12th century. In 1196 Friedrich of Schrofenstein is mentioned as ministry official of the bishop of Chur. In 1898 the castle was a fiefdom of the bishops of Chur.

After the country was parcelled out between the counts of Tirol and Hirschberg, the castle was legal court from 1254 to 1282. In the second half of the 19th century the castle fell into ruins. Today the only thing left is the 12 metres high keep. Since 1946, there is the ruin of private property.

His father, Josef Anton Puellacher worked as a church painter. This worked from about 1786 to 1787 in the Swiss region St. Gallen (Schloss Hagenwil). Leopold Josef Puellacher was trained since a young age from his father in painting, before he went to Linz with Anton Hitzentaler and Johann Georg Kapeller on their teaching.

The Almabtrieb (German language literally: drive from the mountain pasture) is an annual event in the alpine regions in Europe, referring to a cow train in autumn.

During summer, all over the alpine regions cow herds feed on alpine pastures high up in the mountains (a practice known as yaylag pastoralism). In numbers, these amount to about 500,000 cows in Austria. In Tyrol, every year 190,000 cattles, horses, sheep and goats are placed on 2155 pastures, where they remain about 120 days.

At the beginning of autumn, these herds are led to their stables down in the valley, in the Almabtrieb cow train. In case there were no accidents during the summer, in many areas the cows are decorated elaborately, and the cow train is celebrated with music and dance events in the towns and villages. This is a gigantic change of scenery!

Just two months after his brother passed away, Archduke Felix von Habsburg, the last surviving child of the last Emperor and Empress of Austria died, he was 95 years old, he passed away on 06 September 2011.

He was the last surviving child of the last Austrian Emperor selig Karl I and a member of the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. He was a younger brother of the late Crown Prince Otto of Austria. He lived in the colonia of San Ángel in Mexico City where he had worked as a banker.

Felix, unlike his brother Otto, always refused to renounce his rights to the Austrian throne and membership of the Habsburg family, saying that doing so would violate his human rights. As a result he was banned from entering Austria except for a brief three-day stay in 1989 in order to attend his mother's funeral. The Archduke Felix was born in Vienna in 1916 but went into exile after the monarchy was abolished at the age of three.
He married Anna-Eugénie, née Princess of Arenberg, in 1952 and together they had seven children: Archduchess Maria del Pilar, Archduke Carl Philipp, Archduchess Kinga, the late Archduke Raimund, Archduchess Myriam, Archduke István and Archduchess Viridis.
When his brother Otto, the last Habsburg heir, died in July, Felix was to weak to attend his elaborate funeral.

St Peter Canisius was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church on 21 May 1925 by Pope Pius XI. In Tirol Petrus Canisius is connected primarily as the founder of Innsbruck's College in a special way this Jesuit university and church. After serving as superior, he has also several years in Innsbruck and Hall in Tirol worked as a pastor (1571-1577). His three catechisms for many generations became the most important religious books in Austria.

The Achensee is a lake north of Jenbach in Tyrol, Austria. It is the largest lake within the Tirol.

Together with the Achental valley it parts the Karwendel mountain range in the west from the Brandenberg Alps in the east. The city of Innsbruck bought the lake in 1919 from the St. Georgenberg-Fiecht Abbey, who had received it from the rulers of Schlitters around 1120.

The municipality of Eben am Achensee is made up of the main village of Eben, as well as Maurach am Achensee, Buchau and Pertisau. From Bavaria, already in the 12th century a bridle path has lead from the Achenpass throughout the valley to Maurach and only in 1955 an asphalted road was established. Notburga was cook in the family of Count Henry of Rothenburg, and used to give food to the poor. But Ottilia, her mistress, ordered her to feed the swine with whatever food was left. She, therefore, saved some of her own food, especially on Fridays, and brought it to the poor.

Shortly before her death she told her master to place her corpse on a wagon drawn by two oxen, and to bury her wherever the oxen would stand still. The oxen drew the wagon to the chapel of St. Rupert near Eben, where she was buried. Her ancient cult was ratified on 27 March, 1862, and her feast is celebrated on 14 September. She is generally represented with an ear of corn, or flowers and a sickle in her hand; sometimes with a sickle suspended in the air.

Wiesing in Tirol - Unterland and its 2,000 inhabitants are located between the entrance of the Zillertal valley and the road to Lake Achensee at the Rofan mountains.

In the register of Salzburg it is annotated that in 930 AD the widow and nun Himmeltrud conferred her properties to the bishop Odalbert von Salzburg in a deed of donation and this is actually considered to be the date of the founding of Wiesing, which can look back on a more than a thousand year long history.

The emblem of Wiesing illustrates a green meadow which is meant to represent the German name of the village, as “Wiese” means meadow.

Above this meadow, there is a wall on which the Tyrolean eagle, illustrated on the Tyrolean emblem, is sitting. These two symbols remind on the zoologic garden which once upon a time was located in this place: in 1572 Ferdinand II had a wall built round the forested range of hills in the south west of Wiesing, which was meant to enclose a vivarium.

Oberperfuss is situated on a terrace above the Inntal on the foot of the Ranger Köpfl (1939 m) Mountain, opposite of Grinzens and above the gorge-like entrance to the Sellraintal in Tirol.

The area has already been settled in prehistoric times, a fact that is proven by findings of the Young Stone Age that were made at the Krimpenbachalm pasture, as well as of the Iron Age, testified by findings at the Scheibenbühel hill. In 1083 “Obernperves” was mentioned for the first time. Oberperfuss is the birthplace of the cartographers Peter Anich, Anton Kirchebner and Blasius Hueber - LINK.

Peter Anich (1723-1766) created a map of Tyrol by order of the empress Maria Theresia. Still today this map is known under the name “Anichkarte”.

To the honour of Peter Anich and Blasius Hueber the village established the Anich-Hueber museum, exhibiting mementos of both cartographers. The residence of Peter Anich is located in the locality of Völsesgasse.

The municipality of Götzens, composed of the localities of Götzens, Neu-Götzens, Einödhöfe and Götznerberg, is located on a low mountain range terrace. The emblem of the village illustrates a silver squirrel with golden cones on blue background. That is the coat of arms of a noble family that resided in this area in Middle Ages.

In 1128 AD “Gecens” was officially mentioned for the first time. Around 1232 also the fortress VELLENBERG, a considerable building, was part of the municipality. As it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 17th century, only remnants of this fortress are left.

Also other buildings are worth to be visited, such as the Theresia chapel in the centre of the village as well as the St. Peter and Paul church, boasting elaborate decorations and stucco works.

In winter the nearby Axamer Lizum, a popular skiing area, determines the leisure time in this area. This is where in 1964 some competitions of the Olympic Winter Games of Innsbruck the capital of Tirol were staged.

Pope Pontian or Pontianus was Pope from 21 July 230 to 29 September 235. Pontian and other church leaders (among them Hippolytus) were exiled by the emperor Maximinus Thrax to Sardinia, and in consequence of this sentence he resigned on 25 or 28 September 235. It is unknown how long he lived in exile: according to Liber Pontificalis he died due to the inhuman treatment and hardships he received in the Sardinian mines. According to tradition, he died on the island of Tavolara. His feast day was 19 November, but he is now celebrated jointly with Hippolytus on 13 August.

"Adelshof" in Tabletten /adm. Inzing/ in Tirol Oberland Österreich is famous for the fact that the Duke Friedrich IV. Habsburg "mit der leeren Tasche" /LINK/ once spent a night there and the famous Tyrolean cartographer Blasius Hueber lived and died in this house. But Adelshof is also a very idyllic and romantic place - a reall y small paradise in Tyrol. The beginnings of the building date back to the early Middle Ages. Adelshof was renovated in 1987.

Hatting in Tirol - Oberinntal was mentioned for the first time in the 11th century, from 1974 to 1933 it was integrated into the municipality of Inzing.

Today Hattinh is again an autonomous village and a calm holiday resort.

The emblem of the municipality shows four blue waves, referring to its affiliation to the Inn river, as well as two shamrocks, deriving from the emblem of the Lordship of Hatting. The original layout the village traces back to the ancient salt road from Kematen to Telfs.

The name of the village probably derives from a farm called “Chutney”, which has already existed in 1288 AD. In the 17th century this farm has been transformed into a hunting château and later on into a château castle, which was considered to be the basis for a unique holiday destination.

There are three lakes in the surroundings that can easily be reached on foot, which are the Finstertaler reservoir, Lake Plenderle and Lake Hirscheben - called “Drei Seen”.

Due to its position at 2,000 m asl, Kühtai is highly recommendable for persons suffering from allergies and asthma.

Polling in Tirol /Österreich/ is located about 20 km in the west of Innsbruck.

The legend tells that once upon a time in the area of the Schwimmbach river, a good deal of silver was found. This treasure was discovered by an inhabitant of the village, who started to have his shoes shoed with silver and to shoot with silver bullets when he went hunting. But the man was observed and finally the entire village benefited from the treasure.

In this way Polling became the third village of Tirol in terms of wealth. However, it is more probable that there was a silver mine in those days.The emblem of the municipality shows a silver ridged ribbon on green background and refers to the control structures of the Inn river.
